MTV News: How has the crowd been responding so far to the new stuff?
Chad Smith: They've been responding quite well, I think. They're enjoying themselves.
Anthony Kiedis: With, ah, delicate subtleties, really.
MTV: What have been the biggest crowd pleasers?
AK: They like rockin' out to songs they've heard many times before, Your "Give It Away"s, your "Scar Tissue"s...
CS: "Suck My Kiss"es...
AK: They like "Suck My Kiss."
MTV: Are there particular favorites that you have to play, or ones you get sick of playing?
AK: It comes in ebbs and flows and tides and changes. I think "Otherside" is a fun song to play, because it's kind of challenging, and it's a change of guitar for John. He gets out this big, beautiful white Falcon and it becomes kind of an intimate moment. The crowd digs it. [RealVideo]
MTV: Have you been changing up the set list night by night, or has it been pretty much solid?
AK: We don't Xerox the same set list every night. It's my duty in life to create a slightly new set list. There's a lot of repeat performances in there, but it does change here and there.
MTV: Any cover songs? Like last night, the Foo Fighters did the Proclaimers' "500 Miles," a real crowd pleaser
AK: John covers himself, on a solo record. He does some of his own covers.
CS: And sometimes he'll bust out an old Elton John classic.
AK: Old-school, vintage E.J.
CS: We do what we call tidbits, little bits of, like, [The Clash's] "London Calling," or...
AK: "Guns Of Brixton."
CS: Stuff like that.
MTV: You and the Foos have played some festivals together in the past, right? Is this the first time you've really been out on tour together?
AK: No, 'cause we did the Big Day Out together in Australia, where they played every night, also sort of just right before us, and that's where we sort of did a little bonding and whatnot. I have to say that aside from my own family on tour, Taylor [Hawkins] is the sweetest man you'd ever want to tour with. You see Taylor, and you're on the road, and suddenly feel all right. He's a good man. He's a kind man. He's a good man.
MTV: Have you been rekindling the male bonding? Pickup games and kickball, stuff like that?
AK: [Laughs] Is that what you guys were playing last night?
CS: We played kickball. Well, actually, we were playing kick the can. Yeah.
AK: [Taylor] did come out and play the drums on our very own set last night. Joined Chad-o on the hi-hat.
CS: I invited him up, 'cause I often go up and do the same during [the Foo Fighters'] set. I think the other night, Dave [Grohl] was saying some things about me onstage the night before, and then the next night I had to kind of get him back, so I rode a bicycle onstage, just as he was singing like [sings falsetto]... the lighters went out. He just started laughing. It cracked him up so, you know, it's just games and hi-jinx out there.
MTV: Any chance you guys are going to jam together, all eight of you up there?
AK: I wouldn't look forward to eight, but five or six at a time, maybe. I actually have plans to go out on a double date with Taylor when I get home. We're gonna take our girlfriends out to dinner in Venice, California. So there you go.
Flea: [Foo Fighters] are a completely different band than us. It's like, they are a nice bunch of guys, and I've never jammed with any of them, so I couldn't say what that would be like. But they are a completely nice bunch of guys. Taylor keeps talking about doing some sort of Genesis song.
John Frusciante: "Suppers Ready." [Laughs] He keeps saying, "We can go to the rehearsal room! 'Suppers Ready!'" It's like a half-hour song written by Genesis that was their most ambitious piece they have done to date. I couldn't come anywhere close to playing it on the guitar.
F: Taylor came up and played "Under The Bridge" out of time last night with us. I was sitting there playing, I was like, "What the f*** is Chad doing?" and I look over and there was Taylor, all looking cool with a smoke.
Taylor Hawkins [interrupting]: Who's your favorite rock drummer besides Chad?
AK: Besides Chad?!
CS: Taylor, the greatest! I love you!
AK: That would be Taylor from the Foo Fighters, the greatest rock drummer alive.
TH: I paid him to say that.
AK: In fact, I paid him. I asked him if I could do his beard-shaving from now on.
CS: It looks good today!
TH: You like it?
AK: Hell, yeah. I figured your girl was down with it.
TH: Exactly, 'cause when I have nothing, I have too much of a baby face. I love you!
AK: Really? 'Cause we were just talking sh** about you.
CS: Oh my God, were we?
MTV: Oh, it was awful. I've never heard so much bitching.
TH: [This is] the greatest rock tour of 2000, or 20,000, or whatever the hell it is. Thanks, guys, for letting us come on your tour.
AK: This is your tour, and we're just happy to be along for the ride.
TH: Aww, you say that to every opening band! [Laughs]
