MTV: I'm with one of the toughest bands in rock history right now, the Deftones, and I'm seeing Abe and Chi with towels on their heads like girls.
Cunningham: There's no girls. It's all good. We're just women.
Carpenter: Watch out. I know he looks like a weak girl right now, but he'll freak out and pop like a firecracker in a second.
MTV: Right now, it looks like you guys just took a shower.
Moreno: No, I didn't take no showers. This is just sweat.
MTV: That's just sweat? Dripping sweat?
Moreno: No water.
Cheng: It's gross.
MTV: All right. Forget Jenny Craig, forget Slim Fast, and forget other weight loss programs that they have out there. The Deftones Weight Loss System. You guys will be like skinny bitch-ass models.
Moreno: I do that all the time, man, I swear. Like, I come home, I'm touring, and I start grubbing and I just [gain]. You know, writing the record, you're just chillin', you're not doing anything. Then I go on tour and just [lose it].
MTV: You guys gave a shout-out to Philly tonight. Why did you guys kick off your tour here?
Moreno: I think it was just the geography. Do the math.
Cunningham: Do the map, too.
MTV: Dude, I failed map.
Moreno: This place has always been really cool for us. When we were playing Philly shows, we opened up for 311 here, like four months, whenever, I think [after] "Adrenaline" was just out, and the crowd was just so receptive. Like, last time we played here [was] when Chi, his foot was messed up, and we had Sergio Vega from Quicksand filling in for us on bass. We needed a warm-up show, so we booked a show here, and they announced it on the radio that day, and we just came and played, and it was packed. The crowd here, they're just nuts.
MTV: What's cool is, you guys are playing old, old-school stuff, going back to "Adrenaline" and "Around The Fur," with your new stuff, and people were going from moshing to swaying back and forth.
Moreno: We've always had those types of dynamics in our music, but now you hear them a lot more. People are very receptive to it; people are cool with it. They are able to accept when it gives you a breath. I know if I was at a show, and it was constantly "rar-rar-rar" in your face all the time, it wouldn't be that effective toward the end of the show. This is a good way to kind of have everybody take a little break and just enjoy something that is a lot more soothing and warm and then get back to the craziness.
MTV: You had one person from the crowd singing with you on your songs. Was that off the cuff? Weren't you worried about somebody just grabbing you or hitting you or something?
Moreno: Nah, at that point, I work out of my own vibe. Just the energy. That's why I end up doing dumb things, too. I end up going out into the crowd, and people, they were, like, pulling down my pants.
MTV: Will your wife get jealous?
Moreno: Nah, she don't mind. She will, but...
MTV: It's like acting.
Moreno: Acting, sure.
MTV: You pretend to enjoy it. [Everyone laughs] Chino, you need to get a belt. Your pants fell off a million times. How many times did you have to pull your pants up?
Moreno: These are Gucci right here, so they don't have belt loops.
