-- by Alexandra Phanor, BET.com Staff"I like your song, but I didn't like what you were talking about. That wasn't cool," says Blu Cantrell in a deep voice, mimicking the men who approach her on the street about her first single, "Hit 'Em Up Style (Oops!)" "When they take the time to listen to the lyrics, they get mad," Cantrell explains, with an obvious roll of the eyes.
And it's no wonder.
The single, produced and written by hitmaker Dallas Austin, is based on an experience of one of Cantrell's girlfriends. It suggests that ladies dig deep into their man's pocket when he steps out of line: "Hey ladies/ When your man wanna get buckwild/ Just go back and hit 'em up style/ Put your hands on his cash/ And spend it to the last dime/ For all the hard times."
Although the 25-year-old Cantrell doesn't admit to having taken these unencumbered shopping sprees herself, she still doesn't see what the big deal is. "They're just hating!" she says of her detractors. Certain people may have issues with the song, but it certainly isn't putting a wrinkle on Cantrell's rise to the top. The tongue-in-cheek video, which features Cantrell purchasing cartfuls of designer duds before hosting a yard sale of all of her man's pricey belongings, is climbing the charts faster than a Neiman Marcus saleswoman can ask "Cash or credit?"
