MTV News: You chose "Life Story" as the title of your new album. Is this album really personal?
Black Rob: No doubt, because it's my debut, you know. It's very personal.
MTV: Is it tough putting your personal stories out there like that?
BR: Nah, never. All my life I've been able to speak my mind, speak to other people and talk about my life. Maybe somebody could learn something from me. I went from jail to having the hottest joint in the world. That's a Cinderella story.
MTV: Tell me about the single, "Whoa!"
BR: It's everyday slang; we just took advantage of it, capitalized on it. Now it's a serious smash, everywhere we go. Hawaii, Cali, New Orleans, Cleveland, Detroit, Miami, New York, Boston. When that record comes on, you know it's on.
MTV: How about the video? Do you love to be in front of the camera?
BR: Love it. I'm a born entertainer. Even when I was little, I used to do splits and jump up like Michael Jackson. This is the field I was born to be in, and I'm gonna milk it for everything it's worth.
MTV: What was your reaction when you first heard the album was doing really well?
BR: I knew the first week was going to be monstrous, and it was. We sold more than everybody except Santana and George Strait. But I'm just enjoying it, man. I'm grounded. I ain't got no car yet, no house. I'm just chillin'.
MTV: When you were in jail, was rap a means for you to express your frustration?
BR: Nah, I'm never frustrated. I mean, when I was in jail, I knew I had to be there, so I knew what I had to do in order to stay focused and not let anything sabotage me. Frustration wasn't a part of my everyday life. I don't get mad too easily, man. Everything is love to me unless it directly affects me, and then I gotta change my game plan. I'm just enjoying the success.
MTV: Is your family supportive now of what you're doing?
BR: I've never been with my family, so for them to be out of my life now really doesn't mean anything to me. I learn to deal with it. They're behind me now. Why wouldn't they be? They weren't behind me when I was doing bad, you know, but I can't let that stress me. I don't hang out with my mother, I never did. My pops, screw him. I don't fabricate too many things, man. I just want you to know that what I'm saying is real.
