5. Finally, no celebrity judges.
For the second and third seasons, producers tried to spice up the performance nights with guest judges, but bookers had a problem finding hip celebs (Quentin Tarantino was the exception) and instead relied on old-timers like Neil Sedaka, Smokey Robinson and Ashford & Simpson. They did slightly better last year with Brandy, LL Cool J, Kenny Loggins, Mark McGrath and Gene Simmons, but moved them to the audition round, where guest judges just seemed out of place.
So this time it's back to simply Randy, Paula and Simon.
"We don't have the time for it," Nigel Lythgoe reasoned. "We tried to do it with four but there's too much talking. At the end of the day, even though we love the snide comments and the heartfelt comments from the judges, it's about the contestants and moving that along."
"We don't need them, dude," added Randy Jackson. "Come on, you've got the professionals up here now!"
