There was a time, believe it or not, when religiously watching "American Idol" was something to hide. These days, though, please — everybody seems to be out and proud. And who can blame us? No other show combines so many addictive elements. Drama. Suspense. Controversy. Rehashed Stevie Wonder songs. Manicures that lead to big honkin' infections. It's all there.

Just in case you were thinking you've been there, done that, and don't need to see a fifth season of the show, though, we offer 10 reasons to help you come to the inevitable realization that you need to watch "Idol" again. Here goes ...

1. Honestly, really, without a doubt ... season five has the most talented singers yet.

"We say this every year, but this year I've got to tell you, it's better than ever," judge Randy Jackson said of the latest crop of "Idol" hopefuls. "I think what happens is every year the show does well and the public tunes in, and it just validates the show that much more and better and better singers come out."

After seeing a string of winners and runners-up rise from smaller Southern cities, the producers also looked to better the talent pool by visiting such places as Greensboro, North Carolina. "Some of the big cities are a little bit more affected," Jackson explained. "I often say people watch a little too much VH1 and MTV, so they're trying to mimic those that they see on those channels. I think the different cities proved really, really good for us. Greensboro was an eye-opener. It's just an honest town."
