Guy R. Brewer Boulevard and 134th Avenue
Curtis is seduced by the hustle game ...
"I started hustling around 12. And I started hustling because I was having a difficult time in school. They was telling me that if I did school for about six more years, I could get a job and maybe buy a nice car. I ran into people that got those nice cars hustling in six months. So [hustling] didn't seem like one of the options — it seemed like the only option at the time.
I actually have nothing today that I could show and say, 'This is from when I was hustling.' No ring, a pendant, nothing. That's just proof to myself ... all of that time I spent and everything that I was acquiring from it turned into nothing. When you factor in the time spent, the hours standing on a corner, the time possibly spent in jail, you making less than minimum wage. All the money that you accumulated, when you get arrested, you've got to bail yourself out, you gotta pay your lawyer fees, that's a constant situation. Then afterwards, you go to jail."
Barbershop, Guy R. Brewer Boulevard
An old haunt ...
"This is the only barbershop that's been here the entire time. It was here way back when we was on the strip. There are some new faces around, but a lot of people I still remember. It's been a while. When I pop in, it be early, a lot of people don't be around a lot. It's cool as long as you don't tell police I'mma be there. Then it gets so hectic. They're afraid that something will happen. It causes more problems than it does help. I'm from this, I come through the neighborhood every now and then. I don't come stay like that 'cause I don't wanna cause too much commotion. Everybody from the neighborhood is cool. They say things when I'm gone, though. Either you're inspired by my situation or you envy it."
