"[With my mixtapes early on] I did what hadn't been done before. I had been conditioned to be a songwriter. Even when [the songs I put out] were considered freestyle, I did it in song format. I always wrote a chorus to the freestyles and put Lloyd Banks, Tony Yayo on the freestyle with me or I did it by myself. I put the chorus on it because when I was going through the [musicmaking] process with Jam Master Jay early on, the only thing I couldn't really do good was write a chorus. I spent so much time focusing on that area that now I'm the go-to guy for the hit choruses. I spent all of my time focused on that portion of songwriting because if the chorus is right, the rap part is easy."
