Sitting in the greenroom of MTV's "TRL" recently, waiting to debut his video for "21 Questions," a jovial 50 Cent was asked what he plans to do with all that money he's made from being a mainstream star.

"I might invest in more bulletproof vehicles or other little things," the 26-year-old said with a laugh. Why wouldn't he be upbeat? His Get Rich or Die Tryin' is selling at an almost scary rate, luring more than 4.3 million buyers in just 12 weeks and charting a course to outsell Em's The Eminem Show. And then there's his CD/DVD package, The New Breed, which debuted at #2.

"I didn't anticipate selling that many records," 50 marveled. Earlier this year, before its release, 50 estimated Get Rich might end up selling 5 million copies. "I sold 872,000 copies my first week. It's almost normal for artists to drop like 35 percent in sales the following week. I came back and did 822,000 the next week, so I was shocked."

Thanks to his chart success, the scale of his shows has grown. He's graduated from rocking clubs in late 2002 and early 2003 to performing in theaters for the past several weeks. In July he'll start hitting amphitheaters, co-headlining a summer tour with Jay-Z that also features Snoop Dogg, Missy Elliott, Busta Rhymes and Fabolous.

"In Da Club" is easily the year's most played tune, and his follow-up, the love anthem "21 Questions," became another instant hit on radio and TV. It went to #1 on "TRL" just two days after its debut and has stayed among the show's top played vids. The story is no different on BET's "106 & Park." The demand for 50's time forced him to shoot "21 Questions" and his next video, "Many Men," back-to-back in March.

"My schedule is consistent," he said. "I got a show every day, so it didn't really bother me shooting two videos. Actually, in the middle of that I had to go and do a concert, then I had to fly back and complete the visuals. We shot both of them in five days.

"['Many Men'] is a little more edgy," he continued. "It's real. Jesse Terrero directed this video. He had an opportunity to work with me early on 'Wanksta,' so he kind of understood the vision for the record."

And despite all the work that goes into shooting two videos at once, surely it was easier than just several months back, when a fairly unknown 50 Cent actually had to beg women to appear in his clips.

"When we shot 'Wanksta,' we had no money," Terrero said of the clip, which was shot in late October 2002. "It was a one-day shoot, nobody was outside, nobody gave a f---. I had to beg half the girls to be in ['Wanksta'] because we couldn't afford their rate. We shot 'Wanksta' in L.A.; nobody knew who he was on the West Coast. Everybody was like, 'Who the hell is 50 Cent?' "

Though 50's status is on the upswing, Terrero said the rapper's head is not in the clouds.

"From 'Wanksta' to 4 million records later, when we was doing 'Many Men' he still had that hunger," the director said. "You don't have to wait for him, he still comes out of the trailer ready to work. He did all his own stunts in 'Many Men.' He had to hit the gate, he hit the floor 10 times in a row with no complaints. He's so passionate about his work, he puts his all into it. I respect that."

As successful as 50 has been with his feel-good music, he's been equally adept at hurting feelings, especially when it comes to a certain rapper who grew up only minutes away from him.
