After a meeting with Hip-Hop heavyweight Lil Wayne, Young Ref knew his music was on the right track.
Born Daniel Orlando Poveda in Miami, FL, Young Ref comes from first-generation Cuban immigrants who didn't let their grandson forget about his culture. His family did what they could to provide, but when that was not enough, Ref took matters into his own hands. Like many hustlers on the grind, rapping wasn't in Young Ref’s original game plan. It was not until age 15 when Ref discovered his talent for rhyming. Having lost many things in his life-- family, friends and time, Ref had a sense of urgency about his music. Writing became therapy, a way to take in and come to terms with his surroundings without the slightest thought that other people would want to listen to what he has to say.
“I rap on what I know and I speak from the heart, and it’s a blessing for other people to want to hear my words”-Young Ref
