William Kurk is the progeny of a strong lineage of musicians: both mother and father were musicians; his grandmother, Dr. Lena McLin, is a noteworthy music educator and composer; and the legendary Thomas A. Dorsey, founder of Gospel music, is his great uncle. Born and raised on the South Side of Chicago, Kurk started his formal vocal training with his grandmother, Dr.McLin around age 13. While attending Hales Franciscan High School, he started playing the piano. As early as 16, Kurk was playing with the Ken Chaney Big Band, and playing solo piano gigs around town. Kurk would attend Northern Illinois University for a semester to continue voice study with renowned baritone, Robert Sims (an esteemed pupil of Dr. McLin). Kurk transfered to Columbia College Chicago to pursue an interest in Jazz Studies under Bill Russo, with a concentration in piano performance. While picking up studio work as a session player for Motown/Universal artist Prophet Jones, Kurk would be introduced to Tom Washington (arranger for Earth, Wind, & Fire, Genesis, The Jacksons), and quickly became an apprentice to studio production and string arrangement. Tom Washington would introduce Kurk to the Black Ensemble Theater in 2001, and quickly became an accompanist for various productions. Upon being recognized by the veteran musicians on the scene, he was hired to tour with The Dells, as well as The Marvelettes, Platters, and Coasters. After acquiring a Bachelors Degree in Music Composition from Columbia, Kurk continued to work for several theater companies as a musical director/sound designer/pianist. Kurk was nominated in 2007 for Best Musical Director by the Black Theater Alliance for the musical Sarafina. William Kurk has released five studio albums: 'The Sound: Vol.1', 'The Sound: Vol. 2', 'The Sound: Vol. 3', 'Pop Fusion', and 'Super Pop Fusion'.
