At various times she has also been a gas station clerk, cocktail waitress, Texas Hold 'Em dealer for an underground poker ring, National Merit Scholar, volunteer clown, foreign exchange student, Rock-N-Roll camp counselor, guitar instructor, Academic All-State alumna, actress, improv comedienne, interior designer, hair model, web designer, electric scooter tour guide, thrift store fashionista, yogini, day tripper, renewable energy advocate and amateur sushi chef turned professional musician and songwriter.
MIZE began singing in children's choirs before she started school, teaching herself piano at age 4, and added guitar to her repertoire during a semester in Europe that forever changed her life.
After graduating Magna Cum Laude with a BA in Music, Valerie moved to New York City to build a band and further her musical endeavors. She teamed up with producer/engineer Robert L. Smith (U2, Imogen Heap, Lady Gaga) at Defy Recordings to record her independently released debut EP “Auspices”, which was recently featured on the iTunes Nashville Indie Spotlight page, alongside such talents as Matthew Perryman Jones, Holly Williams, Katie Herzig, and The Vespers.
While living in New York, MIZE fronted a funk jam in the Village and performed regularly at venues like the Bitter End, Rockwood Music Hall, and the Living Room (venues known for giving rise to superstars John Mayer, Stefanie Germanotta/Lady Gaga, and Norah Jones). She also participated in the Leave a Lasting Mark Concert Series, a mass collaboration of the NYC singer-songwriter community to benefit various local and national charities, and has performed a dozen times to benefit Mercy Flight WNY.
In 2010, Valerie toured with Paula Nelson (Willie's daughter), and has performed multiple shows with Mary Ramsey of the 10,000 maniacs including packed houses at Ani DiFranco's Babeville and New Year's Eve 2012 at Statler City's ICE BALL. Ms. MIZE opened for the Average White Band this New Year's Eve, and sang harmony vocals for a number of talented artists, such as Liz Davis (The Voice Season 3), and Bri Arden, including Bri's winning performance for the NYC College Battle of the Bands, presented by SESAC.
Valerie can be seen in Gavin DeGraw's “Soldier” music video, Rachel Pearl's “Workout Anthem” video, Balcony TV NYC, Lena Dunham's “GIRLS” on HBO, ASCAP's promotional video for EXPO2012, and the feature film “Queen City” with Peter McGennis, Susan Tedeschi, Sharon Jones, and Vivica A. Fox.
