Updata was founded in 2003 by Richard Bennett and Victor Baldorino, who remain the company's Executive Directors.

Updata is listed on the UK Government Buying Solutions Framework RM374/L3 (Telecom Networks - Infrastructure and Connectivity). This framework is for services in the areas of 'multipoint connectivity & bandwidth for Wide-Area Networks (WANs) and Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs), broadband infrastructure & access including Local Loop Unbundling (LLU), Virtual Private Networks (VPNs).'
In 2012, Updata was named as one of 12 preferred suppliers on the Public Services Network for Connectivity (PSNC) framework, which gives public sector bodies more competitive choice during their tender process. The Company was also the first SME to gain DNSP status.
