Thom Donovan is a singer, songwriter, producer, and guitarist whose music blends modern arrangements with experimental sound. While many artists spend time looking back, Donovan prefers facing forward—pushing old sounds into the future. A rock ‘n roll background mixed with a classical education and a love for electronic music.

Donovan began his career as a session musician, recording and touring worldwide with a variety of artists. He formed his own band, Lapush, with his brother in 2002. The band released three collections: an ep by Lapush (2003), Someplace Closer To Here (2005), and Modern Blues (2007). Lapush made their network television debut on Last Call with Carson Daly on NBC in 2005. Their songs were featured regularly in film and television (Laguna Beach and The Hills on MTV, and Moonlight on CBS, to reference a few).

In 2008, Donovan opted for reinvention, and embarked on a solo career. He released Cast A Light in 2010, followed by Mercury Maybe in 2012, and his most recent, Canon in 2014. His music has attracted the attention of music supervisors, as well as Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols (who featured “September Glows” on his KROQ show), and Wyclef Jean, whom Thom collaborated with on his latest single, “Shipwreck” (a twisting blend of distorted classical guitars and drum machines featuring guest vocalist, Ruby Amanfu). Donovan’s exploratory approach to songwriting upholds his hybrid philosophy of futuristic and classical musical experimentation. Canon was self-produced and recorded in Donovan’s East Nashville home studio; mixed by Vance Powell (Jack White, The White Stripes), and mastered by Richard Dodd (George Harrison, Tom Petty).

From The Deli Magazine: “…bending pop music to his classically-trained sensibilities—Such endeavors result in high-brow concepts such as tracks inspired by poems from 1562 (“The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet,” Arthur Brooke) with unusual instrumentation and a mind towards ear-catching repetition.”

Finding it impossible to sit still, Donovan formed the duo, Rossi, with Kendall Morgan in 2012. A handful of singles has lead to placements on The Good Wife on CBS, and Body of Proof on ABC.

On Rossi, Krystal Wallace writes: “Morgan’s ethereal voice could haunt the cobwebbed halls of a gothic church, albeit one equipped with electric bass. Donovan’s blend of classical guitar and experimental keys make for a twistedly whimsical experience, like walking through an enchanted forest of orchestral sound.”

Side note: Donovan had a recurring role as a musician during the first two seasons of Nashville on ABC, performing songs written by Elvis Costello and produced by T Bone Burnett. While taping Season 1, Thom met Wyclef Jean, leading to their collaboration on “Shipwreck”.
