Josh Dolgin, better known by his stage name Socalled, is a Canadian rapper, accordionist, puppet maker, photographer, magician and record producer, known for his eclectic mix of hip hop, klezmer, and other styles such as drum & bass and folk music. With his group or solo, Socalled has played in China, across Eastern and Western Europe, Africa (Ile de la Reunion), and across North America. He has played with clarinetist David Krakauer's Klezmer Madness!, and has also worked with artists such as Theodore Bikel, Derrick Carter,Irving Fields, Josey Wales, Killah Priest, singer Katie Moore, rapper C-Rayz Walz, Chilly Gonzales, funk trombonist Fred Wesley, and violinist Sophie Solomon. Dolgin's parents are both from Winnipeg, Manitoba, and he has Ukrainian, Romanian and Russian roots. His remix of Moe Koffman's "Curried Soul" has become the theme song for the CBC's nightly "As it Happens" radio show Dolgin gave a course at Concordia University in Montreal in the theatre department in 2013. Socalled has a cover band that plays, according to Socalled, "the greatest songs of all time" called "Fabricville". Dolgin is the subject of The "Socalled" Movie, a documentary released in 2010 by Garry Beitel for the National Film Board of Canada, which also features Krakauer and Wesley. The documentary includes footage of the first "Klezmer Cruise", in which a boatload of klezmer fans sailed down the Dnieper River in the Ukraine. His musical "The Season" came out in 2013 and will be presented in Hamburg in the summer of 2014. His next musical, "Odessa Stories", based on the tales of Isaac Babel, had a three week run at the Segal Center in Montreal. The soundtrack from this production will be released soon. He released a new album, entitled Sleepover, on May 3, 2011, which garnered a Juno Award nomination He produced funk-klezmer supergroup Abraham Inc's "Tweet Tweet" in 2009. In 2011 he produced Geoff Berner's "Victory Party" and co-produced Enrico Macias' album "Voyage D'une Melodie". He produced Canaille's "Manger du Bois" in 2012 and is currently (2014!!) working on producing the new record of Ben Caplan. He has a dog named Poopsie (citation needed.)
