About Roy Hytower

Well-regarded as a blues guitarist and soulful singer around Chicago, Roy Hytower has carved out an equally impressive niche as an actor in various Windy City musical productions. Among his starring roles: portraying Muddy Waters and Otis Redding.

After picking up some experience singing around Mobile, Hytower came to Chicago in 1962, replacing Mighty Joe Young as rhythm guitarist for Otis Rush. Often adopting a soul-slanted sound, Hytower cut 45s for Avin, Expo, Brainstorm, and Mercury's Blue Rock subsidiary (where he sang the fine "I'm In Your Corner" and "Undertaker" in 1969). Hytower's 1988 album Root Doctor (with his band, Motif) was issued on Diamond Gem Records. He still performs locally. ~ Bill Dahl, Rovi
