About Radamés Gnatalli

Radamés Gnattali (January 27, 1906 - January 13, 1988), was a Brazilian classical composer, conductor, orchestrator, and arranger. Radamés Gnattali was born in Porto Alegre, the son of Alessandro Gnattali and Adélia Fossati. Both his father and mother were musicians. Gnattali was a pianist and violinist early in his career, but soon after moving from Porto Alegre to Rio de Janeiro he became a successful conductor, composer and arranger. Though his first works were background scores for radio serials, by the 1930s he was composing concert music in a Neo-Romantic style also incorporating jazz and traditional Brazilian strains. Over the decades, the emphasis Gnattali placed on these components shifted towards jazz in the early 1950s and back towards the Brazilian popular styles by the start of the 1960s. He composed several important guitar scores, the weightiest being three solo concertos and three duo concertos. He died in Rio de Janeiro.
