With his father being one of the original writers / composer / musician for Motown Records, growing up as a kid Jerry Jr had spent a lot of time in the studio. During his school years, he won numerous talent shows, and was top student in drama club. Jerry acted in many plays; it was there, that Jerry had found a comfort zone in performing on stage. Growing up, Jerry had to deal with the hardships and social ills of poverty and the life of violence, but continued to stay focused, positive and away from trouble. He began his career as a vocalist in the mid-1980s when gansta rap first started appearing in his native Los Angeles. Above the law was signed to Ruthless and they were working on their album "Livin' Like Hustlers," it was during this time, Jerry was introduced to Eazy E through Lay Law / Law House. His style of singing and rapping had immediately caught Eazy's attention. Eventually, this led him to signing with Eazy-E's Ruthless Records label at the end of 1989. It was then that Jerry had adopted his stage name “Kokane”, which was given to him by his cousin Hutch aka Cold 187um from Above the Law. The name “Kokane” is a representation of how dope & addictive his sound is to the ear.
