Kaura (pronounced kay-aura) was born from the vision of infusing the aggressive power of hard, yet melodic rock with the haunting and ethereal sounds of ancient instruments. A sound that is epic and bittersweet yet uplifting, and calls to mind bands such as A Perfect Circle, Dredg, Snow Patrol, 30 Seconds to Mars, and Muse. Recently relocated from Berkeley to Los Angeles, Kaura in the short time since they have formed, have racked up an impressive list of accomplishments. Bill Graham Presents has invited them to open for bands such as TOOL in Sacramento, A Perfect Circle’s Paz Lenchantin guested on their self-released EP and they are receiving airplay on Bay Area radio stations such as 105.3 and 107.7 as well as Los Angeles’s World Famous KROQ. The band recently toured the country and performed at South By Southwest in Austin and subsequently landed it’s song ‘Now or Never’ in a Ford Motors national advertising campaign. In the spring of 2012 the band released an acoustic DVD and EP, ‘The Acoustic Sessions’ which featured the band playing acoustically with a 3 piece string section. The band is looking forward to playing some special acoustic shows in the the summer and fall.
In addition to their acoustic release, Kaura released their first full-length album, ‘That Which Defines Us’ in late 2011, that featured sessions with Sylvia Massey (System of a Down, Johnny Cash), Ken Andrews (Failure) and Alex Newport (At the Drive In). Central to the album’s sound were the instruments that they collected on their travels to India, Thailand, Bali, Cambodia, Laos, and Nepal. “We didn’t want to make it obvious as to what instruments you were listening to but rather blend them in subtly" explains drummer Benjamin Jones about the bands sound. Guitarist Ben Rojas adds, “We wanted to have the ability to infuse hammered dulcimers with distorted guitars, gamelan bells and tabla with tribal drums to create this really expansive depth of sound." The band came to be after many years of envisioning the message, mood, sights and sounds that would be used to create the unique palette from which the vision of Kaura would be created. Comprised of Malcolm Guess (vocals, guitar, tabla), Benjamin Jones (drums, percussion), Ben Rojas (guitar), and Josh Albright(bass); the band seeks to not only carve out a unique musical voice but also a different lyrical voice. "The lyrical focus is more on themes of evolution, re-birth, social and personal consciousness rather than the standard self-loathing, angry at-the-world fare of most hard rock bands" says Guess. “We’ve only hinted at what’s to come”.
