Jensen Reed may be making a name for himself as a hip-hop artist, but his art encompasses more than beats and rhymes. His new album, “The Left Coast,” combines diverse musical influences and insightful lyrics into a collection that provides a unique look at life in the 21st century.
Created with producer Christian James-Hand (The Mowgli’s), Reed’s longtime collaborator, it includes contributions from The Mowgli’s and Drew Seeley (“Lovestruck: The Musical”), who co-wrote and performs on “So You Know.” With director Matthew Roe, Reed also created several videos, including one for the title tune that’s filled with L.A. imagery. But he directed the video himself for “Rocketship,” an emotionally potent song about losing loved ones to suicide.
Reed has performed on L.A. stages including the Roxy and Troubadour, and at Bardot for It’s A School Night!, curated by KCRW’s Chris Douridas, and his songs have been heard in “CSI: NY,” Showtime’s “House Of Lies,” “Friday Night Lights,” MTV and VH1 shows, the Oscar-nominated film “The Messenger” and director Mark Pellington’s film, “I Melt With You.”
