Isildurs Bane is a progressive rock band from Halmstad, Sweden, frequently known as the abbreviation IB.
Origin of the name:
Isildurs Bane is, both in the original English version and in the translated Swedish one, one of the several names of the One Ring in J. R. R. Tolkien's novel The Lord of the Rings. When the band was formed in 1976, there was a huge interest in the fantasy style in books, art and music, making it quite natural to choose a name associated with the kind of music they made.
The band was formed in 1976 and to begin with, they were influenced by progressive bands from the UK such as Genesis, Gentle Giant, Emerson, Lake & Palmer and Yes. During the late 70's and most of the 80's, the Mats Johansson and Mats Nilsson shared the main writing duties. After Nilsson's departure in 1987, Mats Johansson has composed almost all of IB's music.
In 2005, the band decided to work as a project rather than as a traditional band, thereby gaining flexibility in line-ups and musical material. Later that year, the first of an ongoing series of musical meetings under the name of IB Expo took place. IB Expo is a meeting between musicians from different backgrounds who come to Halmstad, Sweden, to meet and play with IB for one week, do clinics, workshops and masterclasses and perform a long concert together consisting of material representing all the participating musicians. Some of the guests at IB Expo over the years have been Jerry Marotta, Tom Griesgraber, Mick Karn, Pat Mastelotto, Markus Reuter, Björn J:son Lindh, Mike Keneally, Pamelia Kurstin, Valgeir Sigurdsson, Janne Schaffer, Adrian Belew, Julie Slick, Marco Minnemann, Midaircondo, Michala Østergaard-Nielsen, Tony Levin, Michael Bernier, Jakko Jakszyk, Trey Gunn, Morgan Ågren, Aranis Trio, Phil Manzanera, Guy Pratt, Lindha Kallerdahl, Liesbeth Lambrecht, Iris Thissen, Jolien Wils, David Torn, Richard Barbieri and Steve Hogarth.
