Cologne's Genf takes their instrument background and combines it with their electronic music experience to achieve a sound that lies somewhere between electronic and ambient funk. Before becoming the Genf trio, Oliver Brand (drums and electronics), Olaf Karnik (guitar), and Jens Massel (electronics) had years of experience already behind them. Brand played in the indie rock bands Weiter and Elektro. Karnik has years of DJing experience using the names Shack Attack, Sound Gallery, and Soulful Shack. Lastly, Jens Massel had been releasing ambient music under the name Kandis.
The three German men take their past music experience and aim to create a balance between analog and digital sources. With each track they aim to use drums, guitars, and other live instruments just as much as they use their samplers and synthesizers. Their first album, Rohgenf, was released on Cologne-based label Finlayson. Their second album, Import/Export, and a remix 12" was hosted by Compost Records. ~ Diana Potts, Rovi
