Fort Atlantic is no longer an experiment. In 2010, after years of playing on singer/songwriter stages across America, Jon Black decided he needed a creative outlet to expand his writing techniques and habits. Fort Atlantic was born in a small house in Birmingham, AL and quickly became his main focus.

In 2012 the debut album was released by Dualtone Records (home of Lumineers, Guy Clark, Delta Spirit, and Shovels & Rope) and began grabbing the attention of many music supervisors for television and film. When the song “Let Your Heart Hold Fast” landed on an episode of How I Met Your Mother the glass ceiling was shattered and the world really knew about Fort Atlantic. The lyric video has more than a million views and the album has collected more than a million listens over streaming services.

The music is lush and barren, cinematic and simple, hopeful and desperate, sad and beautiful. It mirrors the duality of existence and dabbles in blending organic and digital sounds ranging from Bladerunner-Meets-Gibson Guitars to Dylan-esque textures.

Now based in Portland, OR, Fort Atlantic isn’t slowing down. With plans to enter the studio in late 2014, the band has started debuting new songs on the road. When asked what to expect from the next album, Jon Black responds: “Bigger.”

This is only the beginning for Fort Atlantic.
