Originally formed as a quintet in 2000 with half of its members still in high school, Livonia, MI's El Boxeo set about refining their post-punk sound and had narrowed to a trio by 2003. Lisa Norton (vocals, violin), Zach Norton (bass), and Danny Sperry (drums) decided to pursue a musical career more actively and released a self-titled EP that same year, followed by Songs from an Unwritten Play About Giant Birds in 2004. Their first full-length album, Awake & Dreaming, was released on Suburban Sprawl Music in 2006.
