About Albert Ssempeke

The musical traditions of the Baganda people of Uganda live through the efforts of kadongo kamu (small guitar) player and vocalist Albert Ssempeke. Together with his band, Aboluganda Kwagalana, all of whom have been appointed royal musicians to the king, he recorded an album, Ssempeke!, of Buganda's pre-independence royal court music at Edinburgh University in 1988. Eight years later, he embarked on a two-year tour with Ganda drummer and dancer Samuel Bakkabulindi. Towards the tour's end, he and his son, John, were interviewed about the role of tradition in modern Ugandan music, by Dr. Janet Topp Fargion for the National Sound Archive of the British Library. ~ Craig Harris, Rovi
