“Making it” in the music industry can be viewed in two different ways. Top 10 billboard or underground success story. A-lex feels that success is measured by who you can effect with your talent, and what can be taken from it and passed along. Born Antoine Alexander in Los Angeles, California, music has been a part of his life since he was a toddler. From a house that was always playing the likes of “Al Green,” to “Stevie Wonder,” A-lex understands that music is therapeutic, and can influence many and also can create enemies. Regardless he pushes himself to the edge with his creativity and is not afraid to step way out of his boundaries to try new formulas of wordplay. At a young age A-lex moved to Bloomfield, Connecticut and at the same time developed Asthma and still struggles with it to this day, but it is this that brings out an ironic fact, he has a monstrous voice. With just the right amount of bass and ability to change his tone on the fly, you can pick A-lex out of 100’s of MC’s on records, very unique to say the least. Also, his lyrical ability stands way ahead of many, rapping lines like “rich chicks love this niggas dieselness, cause im a fuck a million dollar garage with Lamborghini penises,” its obvious he has a very clever way of putting interesting, and comedic lines together.
A-lex started writing rhymes at the tender age of 9 and actually started rapping at 13. Surrounded by many students in middle and high school that had the same passion, the biggest influences for music on his life come from his sister and his father. When A-lex was too young (according to his mother) to listen to explicit rap music, it was his sister that snuck countless cd’s into his room so he could listen to them at night. From “A tribe called quest,” to “Onyx,” there were two groups that stood out to A-lex, “Leaders of the new school,” and “Wu Tang Clan,” especially the groups lyrically extravagant and over the top front men “Busta Rhymes,” and “Reakwon” A-lexs‘ favorite MC’s of all time. He states, “ I would go into my own world when I listen to hip-hop, nothing around me existed except the music. I get really lost in it, its a great feeling.”
A-lex kept writing and writing throughout the years, even with people telling him that he wasn’t good enough, or that he didn’t have what it takes or that he was just flat out whack. He took all that criticism and used it as fuel for his passion to continue to get better, and prove to everyone, he could be successful in the music business. In his life there is one person that he holds close as his mentor in music, his good friend and producer Nate. They have been making music for years and has heard people say “you guys understand each others creativity better than most artists do. You know what each other are thinking when you two are in the studio.” Another person that has played a part in his music endeavors, is his good friend Nick aka Confuzion. Together, through years of rapping together in Nicks’ “Attic” and releasing a number of small mixtapes in Windsor, Connecticut, they were known throughout the town as “Tha Attic.” A-lex always stood out from the pack, people were always asking about him, and trying to go at him. A-lex and Confuzion have since then formed the label “Attic Records, LLC.”
