Formed at school in 2005, Denmark’s A Friend In London are four talented friends who deftly combine the complex alternative and indie influences of their youth with a boy-band pop sensibility. Tim, Ben, Ash and Seb have all had music in their veins from an early age, and the result is a debut album full of tune after unerringly catchy, rock-influenced tune.
With the entire band in their early 20s, they’re as sharply-defined by their instrumental prowess as by their live performances. Lead singer Tim and Seb share lead guitar and powerful chords, while Ash on the bass and Ben’s rock-inspired drumming hold down the rhythm section. Their live shows led to A Friend In London winning the European Final of the BODOG Million Dollar Battle Of The Bands in 2008, which in turn has seen the band touring worldwide.
In 2012 A Friend In London are looking to define their own place in the mainstream music scene. Having appeared at Canadian Music Week in March, the band were then announced as the main support act on NKOTBSB’s European arena tour, reaching out to a far wider group of fans than ever before.
Debut European single ‘Get Rich In Vegas’ perfectly encompasses the band’s musical horizons. Over stadium-style chanting A Friend In London marry strong pop harmonies to vibrant, vital rock rhythms, while Tim’s yearning, emotive lyrics provide hidden depth and story – “The inspiration for my lyrics always comes straight from my heart”. Their forthcoming debut album was recorded in Canada and has been produced by the celebrated Dave Bottrill, who has previously worked on blockbusting albums by the likes of Muse, Placebo and Smashing Pumpkins.
Meet the band: In their own words
Tim Schou – Lead singer & Guitars
I’ve had this dream of singing since I started listening to the 3 Tenors at the young age of 3. Since then I’ve done anything I possibly could to get closer to my dream. My motto is; there’s no point in having a plan B as it only distracts from plan A. I’m a dreamer and I do what it takes to live my dream!
I’m jumping into a world where anything’s possible ... I got a tattoo on my right chest saying “BOYCHILD” which is (a reminder) to stay forever young. It’s very important I think to keep your inner boychild (or girlchild!) alive no matter how old you get; age is just a number!
Ben Svane - Drums
I was in my first band at age 8 as a drummer, and that has been my call ever since. I can't imagine doing anything else than playing, writing and producing music – I’m 100% devoted. In January 2010 I released my debut solo EP 'Always Travel Never Arrive' (which I got tattooed on my left wrist).
I love travelling around the world with my band, meeting new people and getting new friends. All these great experiences will remain in my memory till I die, it's like my life is one long adventure - and I'm so grateful for that!
Ash Bramming – Bass
The only thing I've ever wanted to be is a rock star or a pilot, but I skipped pilot pretty early when I found out they have to do mathematics!
I love the buzz I get when I play on big stages in front of a big crowd.
Seb Olsen - Guitar
I started playing guitar around the age of 8. I listen to a lot of different styles of music, but if I have to name a few I would pick Radiohead, Coldplay, The Smiths and Peter Gabriel. Earlier in my life I listened to a lot of heavy metal, but now I listen to all kinds of music with a good melody and an interesting production.
